Surah Encyclopedia — Frequently Asked Questions
Surah Al-Alaq (No. 96) — also called Surah Iqra — was the first Surah revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in the Cave of Hira. The first five verses beginning with ‘Iqra bismi Rabbika…’ (Read in the name of your Lord) were revealed by Angel Jibreel (AS). Its position in the Quranic arrangement is No. 96, but it was the first in order of revelation.
Longest Surah: Surah Al-Baqarah (No. 2, The Cow) — 286 verses. It also contains Ayat-ul-Kursi (2:255), the greatest verse of the Quran.

Surah Yaseen (No. 36) is called the Heart of the Quran (Qalb-ul-Quran). The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: ‘Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yaseen. Whoever reads Yaseen, Allah writes for him the reward of reading the Quran ten times.’ (Tirmidhi)
Surah At-Taubah (No. 9), also called Surah Bara’at, is the only Surah in the Quran that does not begin with Bismillah. Scholars explain this is because this Surah was revealed as a declaration of disavowal from the polytheists, and Bismillah (which is a blessing) was not appropriate at such an opening.
There are 86 Makki Surahs (revealed before Hijra, in Makkah) and 28 Madni Surahs (revealed after Hijra, in Madinah). The total number of Surahs in the Quran is 114, divided into 7 Manzils for recitation purposes. Makki Surahs generally deal with faith (Iman), while Madni Surahs often deal with law and social guidance.
